VCE Conference 2024

We are proud to announce that our rescheduled VCE Conference will be held on 10 May at the offices of the Australian Computer Society, Collins Street, Docklands. Come along and hear from VCAA personnel about the reaccredited study design, industry experts about IT in action, and approaches to teaching and assessing delivered by practicing teachers. A great opportunity to learn from, and share with others, all things Applied Computing.

Dear Members,

I hope this message finds you well and reinvigorated for the year ahead. Before I get into our plans for 2024, I want to take a moment to reflect on the remarkable achievements of our Committee last year, especially the DigiCon event we held in November 2023. It was a fantastic event that showcased the innovation and dedication of educators in digital technologies. We are also proud to have collaborated with our partners, ACMI and Games for Change for the event.

I would like to thank our dedicated committee, whose tireless efforts made DigiCon not just a possibility, but a resounding success. A special thanks goes to Dr. Matt Harrison, the conference chair, whose leadership, vision, and hard work were crucial in ensuring it was such an impactful event. Thank you.

Looking ahead, we are currently in the exciting phase of planning for this year. We aim to build on the momentum from last year, starting with a series of online events titled "TeachMeets." These sessions are designed to facilitate sharing, learning, and networking among our members, focusing on practical, innovative teaching strategies that you can apply in your classrooms. Details of these events will be shared soon, and I encourage everyone to participate actively.

Additionally, I urge all our members to note the date for our upcoming VCE Professional Learning Day, an exciting in-person event scheduled for May 10th (see above). At this event, VCAA personnel will provide details of the reaccredited study design to be implemented in 2025. In addition, you will hear from industry experts as well as participate in practical sessions targeting the second semester units of VCE Applied Computing. We are thrilled to announce that Paula Christophersen, a well-known expert in digital education, and DLTV life member, will be coordinating the VCE Day with assistance from committee members. With her wealth of experience and insights, we are confident that the event will offer tremendous value and ultimately benefit our students.

In closing, I want to reiterate my appreciation for your continued support and engagement with Digital Learning and Teaching Victoria. Together, we are making a meaningful difference in the educational landscape, facing the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead together. I’m looking forward to a year of growth, collaboration, and innovation.

Digital Teaching Skills Series

The Digital Teaching Skills Series of videos and resources provide insights and suggestions from experienced educators and leaders on ways in which Digital Technologies can enhance student learning across a variety of curriculum areas. 

The series includes:

  • Module 1: Coding in the Mathematics Classroom

  • Module 2: AI-enabled tools and the English classroom

  • Module 3: Electronics and Coding in the Visual Arts

  • Module 4: Emerging Technologies, AR/VR and GIS for Geography Learners

  • Module 5: The Digitisation of the Science Classroom

Introducing the Next Level Collaboration Program

DLTV have partnered with Next Level Collaboration (NLC) to run a Teacher Training Program so you can run these programs in your school. NLC is a research-based program for children aged between 8 to 15 years old that uses their interest in gaming to meaningfully develop collaborative skills, confidence and friendships. NLC is proudly a neurodivergent-led organisation.

Get into the Victorian Coding Challenge in 2023

DLTV is thrilled to announce that the Victorian Coding Challenge has been granted funding to extend for another 3 years! We're continuing to partner with the Mathematical Association of Victoria to make this happen.

Registrations are currently open for 2023.

This two-stage challenge is intended for students with a passion for coding. Watch the video above for more info, or visit the official page.

STEM Professionals in Schools

CSIRO's STEM Professionals in Schools has established an online initiative which aims to give teachers in regional and remote schools greater opportunity to access STEM professionals from a wide range of careers.

What’s involved in this initiative?

The STEM Professionals in Schools team run three online webinars over an 8 week period to connect a STEM professional with a teacher. The webinars help the partnerships get started, plan, and evaluate online activities:

  • Webinar 1: Introduce participating STEM professionalsand teachers.
  • Webinar 2: Develop and plan for a partnership activity.
  • Webinar 3: Share and evaluate after an activity.

DLTV Case Studies - Implementing Digital Technologies

DLTV has been collecting a growing set of school snapshots over 2020-2021. Each case study explores a school's story so far implementing the Digital Technologies curriculum.

We are grateful for the time and effort made by teachers and DigiTech leaders at the participating schools. Every school is at a different point on this journey.

Our new virtual modules Digital Technologies in your school are designed to help you and your school get oriented for delivering Digital Technologies, with an emphasis on pedagogy and challenges for delivery.

The modules include informative and discussion videos, activities to complete, and opportunities for reflection. Those undertaking the modules can book to attend a live session to discuss the material with others.

We didn't want to reinvent the wheel by providing a basic introduction to Digital Technologies curriculum, though we do provide links to recommended starting points.

5 of the 10 planned modules are now available, with others to be released progressively.
