The Digital Systems strand of the curriculum at Years 7 and 8 can be a bit of challenge for the teacher. The theory around packets, hubs and routers can seem a bit abstract and dry.

I recently developed a lesson sequence that uses the BBC micro:bit to take students through the concepts with Morse code and simple alligator lead connections.

    Other ideas I've seen:

    • unplugged activities (see Classic CS Unplugged like this and this.),
    • the Nelson text by Grover and Vinton dedicates a chapter to this topic,
    • the Internet Simulator and relevant courses at code.org,
    • do a tour of the network hardware at your school (with permission from your IT techs).
Much of this material is also relevant to VCE Computing.
