ANNOUNCEMENTS

From the desk of DLTV President Ben Gallagher

I hope everyone is having a relatively smooth end to Term 1. Today I would like to introduce Digital Learning and Teaching Victoria’s ‘Connecting Learning to Work’ project. The resources developed as part of this project were a collaboration between our DLTV team and Careers Education Association Victoria, and was generously funded by the Department of Education and Training Victoria. Right now, there are two great free resources for you to use, which should encourage students to consider careers related to the concepts and skills found within the Digital Technologies curriculum. A key focus of this project is diversity and inclusion, so we have had a strategic focus on developing resources to support female Year 10 students to consider a career in tech. That said, we hope that they are useful for every Victorian student. We hope you use them and find them valuable in your learning and teaching. As always, we would appreciate any feedback you might have to offer so that we can keep working to meet your needs. See below for more information and links to the resources.

Visit our website to find out more about this and other exciting projects.

We are also thrilled to be working with the National Education Summit on the ‘Classrooms of the Future’ project. As we build sustainable partnerships around this project, we will be looking to harness your ideas and thoughts about the future of learning environments in our schools and settings. Beginning with 2022, we will look for your input and will begin a discussion about where this project could go in the future.. In 2023 it is proposed to showcase a real classroom. We have a great competition for you and your students to participate in please see DLTV’s home page for more information.

We know some members are having issues correctly displaying our newsletter. We are investigating this and hope to have it remedied soon. Thank you for your patience.

We are currently doing our Term 2 and Term 3 forward planning, and will showcase some of our offerings in our upcoming newsletters. We are using our PL survey (can be accessed via our home page) to help inform decisions, so please complete it to have your voice heard. If you have a specific topic or suggestion you would like to make, please let our manager Kev know via the below email address:

kev@dltv.vic.edu.au

Finally, if you haven’t renewed your membership, now is the time.

As always reach out if we can support you in any way. We are only ever a phone call or an email away

Cheers

Ben Gallagher

DIGITECH CAREERS: Teacher resource

DLTV is pleased and proud to announce the publication of two exciting resources designed to assist you and other teachers with students considering a career in a Digitech related field.

DLTV, with support from the Careers Education Association of Victoria and the Department of Education has produced two modules absolutely packed with relevant and exciting resources.

The first set sees video interviews with six IT professionals. The professionals are involved in diverse careers in the IT industry including Cybersecurity, Game Design, Web Design and Development, Teaching, Robotics and Software Development. Backing up each interview are discussion prompts, ideas and links to further research, teacher guides, lesson plans and student worksheets. The resource can be found at;

https://dltv.vic.edu.au/Careers-in-Digital-Technologies

The second set of resources, again with support from CEAA and DET, is designed for teachers to encourage girls to consider IT as a secondary subject choice, further education or career option.

The resource comprises a set of stimulus video interviews with career and IT educators discussing ways to encourage female students to consider IT careers or subject choices. These could act as a springboard into class discussions, activities or further research.

Central to the module is a webinar of a panel interview that welcomed students from Melbourne Girls Grammar School, Ave Maria College and Collingwood College all considering their career options and subject selections. They were able to ask questions and gain insights from women IT professionals - Kimberly Hall from Google, Emily Pendlebury from Cybercx and Nicci Rossouw from Exaptec

Teacher Guides, Lesson Plans and Student worksheets accompany the panel webinar. The resource can be found at;

VCE NEWS: Webinar videos + a fix to the Kit

With two of our March VCE topical webinars done (just one more to go tomorrow), be sure to check out the recordings at our YouTube channel.

Are you or is your school a purchaser of DLTV's VCE Applied Computing Resource Kit?

An email will be sent out this afternoon with a fix to the Unit 1 Outcome 1 Sample SAC. A revamping of the World Health Organisation website means that the original link to this data source is no longer useable.

The fix corrects the link and updates the instructions in the accompanying Teacher Notes document.

DRONE SAFETY: Know your drone

Many schools have purchased or are considering the purchase of drones. There are quite a few regulations at the Education Department and Federal Government levels covering how and where you are able to launch them.

  • Are you able to fly a drone at your school?
  • How high can you fly it?
  • Can you fly more than one drone at a time?
  • Can you fly a drone above a group of students?

All these questions and many more are answered through a new resource created by Education Services Australia (ESA) in combination with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

The Know Your Drone website has many resources including age appropriate quizes, (primary and secondary) a board game, lesson plans, student worksheets and animated videos.  Very much worth a look.
