    Join the team from The Brainary for a hands-on introduction to a variety of robotic platforms including the NAO humanoid robot. This session will cover programming concepts and algorithmic logic, such as inputs/outputs, iteration/looping, and if statements. There will also be information on the Everybody Dance NAO robot dance competition including a crash course on animating robot dances with NAO’s programming interface ‘Chorégraphe’.

    This webinar will introduce participants to the Digital Technologies curriculum from F-10. They will become familiar with the curriculum as a continuum. Content of the session includes discussion around: ways of thinking, strands, key terms, content descriptions, achievement standards, levels and some examples of how to approach the teaching. This session will be suitable for teachers with little or no knowledge of the curriculum who are implementing this semester.

    Presenters: Eduard Schaepman and Darrel Branson (VCAA Specialist Teachers)


    Eduard Schaepman is VCAA Specialist Teacher (Digital Technologies), supporting schools across Victoria with the implementation of the new Digital Technologies curriculum. He has worked on sample units, indicative progress and conducted workshops. He is also a teacher at Deepdene Primary School, where has spent many years on the ICT Team, as a technical advisor and an advocate in the effective use of technology across the school. Eduard is able to draw on his previous experiences.


    Darrel Branson works as the Leading Teacher ICT at Mildura West Primary School and as a Digital Coding Specialist for the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority. 

    His school runs a ‘Games Based PBL’ project and students have also been involved in the Games Net project at ACMI over the last two years.

    From 2017 all Victorian Government and Catholic Schools are required to implement the new Victorian Technologies Curriculum. The curriculum covers a range of new and exciting content as well as sharing links with a number of other curriculum areas under the heading of STEAM. It also draws heavily on ways of thinking about design, systems, coding and making.

    This four hour workshop will involve a mix of hands-on experiences as well as an exploration of resources which can be used to support the curriculum. It will provide:

    • a rationale for the introduction of the curriculum
    • a look at the principles underpinning the curriculum.
    • an in-depth look at the two subject areas included in the curriculum i.e. Digital Technologies and Design and Technologies
    • a hands-on exploration of teaching approaches which enhance delivery of this curriculum including experiences with Design Thinking, Computational Thinking and Systems Thinking
    • links to websites that can be used to resource the curriculum
    • a chance to explore a range of games, apps and third party options including robots and control technologies

    To get the best from the day participants are encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet. 

    Parking is available in the area.

    Lunch will be provided and served at 12.30-1.20.

    Presenter information: 

    Having spent more than thirty years teaching in primary schools John Pearce now tutors at Deakin University.

    John’s ongoing interest in both science and the use of ICT across the curriculum has seen him present at local, national and international conferences. Lately he has become interested in digital curriculum including coding and Makerspaces.

    This workshop is for mainstream and special educators who have students working at a primary academic level. This workshop will explore the requirements and challenges of implementing the Digital Technologies Curriculum for students with learning difficulties. Clark Burt of Ashwood School will unpack the curriculum and demonstrate how teachers can adapt it to their contexts. Then he will demonstrate examples of incorporating ICT and games into lessons for diverse classrooms.

    Matthew Harrison of Waratah SDS will explore the 21st Century Skills framework developed to address modern workforce needs, with an emphasis on the opportunities and challenges for students with disabilities. He will lead a practical workshop on how to develop these skills in inclusive spaces using digital tools such as robotics, collaborative games and social media.

    Educators looking to address the VIT requirement relating to learners with a disability should attend.  This workshop addresses the AITSL standards relating to differentiation (1.5) and strategies to support full participation of students with disability (1.6).

    Presenter Information:

    Clark Burt

    Clark Burt is a special education teacher and former lecturer and tutor at The University of Melbourne and RMIT. He is currently on Study Leave from Ashwood School and is running intervention studies at schools around Victoria. He is also a committee member of the Australian Association of Special Education (AASE) Victorian Chapter and has worked with the Department of Education developing the Digital Technologies curriculum for levels A – D.

    Matthew Harrison

    Matthew is an experienced educator, researcher and entrepreneur with a keen passion for utilising technology to enhance children's learning and creativity. He has taught in Australia, South Korea and the United Kingdom at primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Matthew is currently leading workshops at the University of Melbourne Graduate School of Education focusing on inclusive education and the creative use of digital technology as a teaching and learning tool. In addition to this, Matthew is a leader in using technology to work with students with disabilities in a Special Development School (SDS). He is the founder of the edtech startup Hatt Designs and co-founder of CollabHer.
